Wize Up And Jack Petchey Financial Education Tax And Pensions Workshop – Tuesday 28th April
BackOn Tuesday 28th April, all our Year 10 took part in an inspiring workshop, the first of a series of four sessions, hosted by Wize Up in partnership with Jack Petchey Foundation.
Linking to our Careers and PSHCE curriculum at Gaynes School, the session focused on developing students’ financial awareness and understanding of the UK tax system - key knowledge that supports both personal independence and future success in the world of work and personal finance.
The workshop explored what tax is, why it is paid, and the different types of taxation in the UK. Students examined how income tax is calculated, including personal allowance and the various income tax bands, and gained insight into how these apply to different income levels. They then applied this knowledge through practical tasks, such as calculating how much tax an individual earning £65,000 would pay across each tax bracket.
Students also analysed payslips, learning how to check and interpret them, and explored what these looks like for both employed and self-employed individuals. The session further introduced National Insurance and pensions, including the different types available and how these contributions can impact their future financial security.
Throughout the workshop, students engaged in interactive activities that encouraged discussion, problem-solving, and the development of essential life skills in financial literacy.
