STEM IN ACTION TRIP

Back
March 10th 2026

A group of 20 pupils from Years 7–9 recently attended the “STEM in Action” event at the Emmanuel Centre, London. The event brought together leading academics and researchers who delivered a series of short, engaging talks showcasing the fascinating work taking place across the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Throughout the morning, pupils were introduced to a range of inspiring topics. Presentations explored the elements of the periodic table, how artificial intelligence is helping scientists solve the complex protein-folding problem, and how mathematics can explain intriguing shapes found in nature, such as the Möbius strip and torus forms seen in smoke rings.

The final session focused on biomimicry, demonstrating how scientists learn from nature to solve real-world problems. Pupils saw a scorpion glow under ultraviolet light, watched a gecko demonstrate its remarkable wall-climbing ability, and even had the opportunity to handle a snake.

The event offered an exciting glimpse into modern scientific research and highlighted the creativity and curiosity at the heart of STEM careers. It was an inspiring experience that showed pupils just how dynamic, engaging and rewarding a future in STEM can be.
