‘Guys & Dolls’ at Bridge Theatre in London Visit

March 21st 2024

On the 21st of March, a group of Year 10 and Year 9 pupils were given an amazing opportunity to watch an immersive production of the hit musical ‘Guys & Dolls’ at Bridge Theatre in London.

The performance was very intriguing as we had tickets to stand around the stage, which throughout the performance, continued to lift different sections transporting us through the streets of Manhattan. Around us were ushers dressed as Manhattan policemen guiding the audience to different sections in order to get a feel for the performance as we surrounded the stage. This was a good insight, especially for the drama pupils, as we were able to get a proper feel of different ways to immerse ourselves in the theatre, making it appealing to the audience.

The performance was filled with an explosion of music, lights, sound and costumes, making the performance even more astonishing with the help of the astounding cast, who all had outstanding voices leaving the audience in awe. We especially enjoyed “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” performed by Nicely-Nicely Johnson, portrayed by Jonathan Andrew Hume. It left the whole audience clapping and singing along while enjoying the amazing choreography of the whole ensemble!

The performance made me feel excited and intrigued. It brought up many topics from the 1950s which many people still face today. It was incredibly educational yet also entertaining. The performance was considerably inclusive as the actors had often interacted with the performance by giving out leaflets and talking to the audience as a whole.

The performance had shown the importance of religion in the 1950s along with the experiences that women had faced in a wholesome light.

After the performance, members of the audience were allowed to dance with actors. The beautiful moment had brought a smile to everyone's faces.

When the performance was over, I certainly left the theatre feeling joyous and cheerful, and grateful to have been able to see the immersive experience!
