Introduction: What is Sociology?

Sociology is the study of people, society, and how different aspects of our lives—like family, education, and the justice system—are shaped by wider social influences.

It helps students better understand the world they live in and how it affects their attitudes, thoughts and behaviour. We also look at the challenges people face in everyday life. Sociology encourages young people to think critically, ask questions, and understand different perspectives. It helps them become more aware of important social issues such as inequality, crime, and education, while also building valuable skills in research, analysis,
and communication.

We build on their critical analysis of theories, social structures, sociological perspectives and sociological
research methods by equipping students with the skills to be able to evaluate, giving them the
opportunity to ask questions and reflect: What does the evidence suggest? Why is it like that? How might
we use this knowledge? Why must we be cautious of these findings/views?
